EAST LANSING, Mich. - Capturing its fifth win of the season, the Michigan State women's tennis team downed Miami of Ohio, 6-1, on Sunday, Feb. 13th. For the sixth straight match, the Spartans earned the doubles point as they improved to 5-1 on the season.
"This was a really good match for us because we have been playing well," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We had one tough loss against Akron, 4-3. Today, especially since this team did win the MAC conference last year, for us, it was a really big confidence booster going into next week when we play another MAC team with Western Michigan."
In the No. 1 singles spot, Amy Barton downed Stephanie Danesais, 6-4, 6-1, to tally her sixth singles win. The Redhawks only point of the match came when Anastasia Drachera topped freshman Valentina Rusakova, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Marina Bohrer defeated Megan Martzolf by a score of 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 position. Senior Whitney Wilson recorded a victory over Riekie Honiball, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Dana Guentert blanked Cara Wald, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Michaela Silesova also dropped Jessica Parr, 6-0, 6-1.
Suffering their first doubles loss of the season, Barton and Bohrer fell to Danesis and Marzolf, 8-2. Wilson and Silesova paired up and defeated Wald and Drachera, 8-5. Sophomore Nicole Herzog and Guentert captured an 8-5 victory over Honiball and Parr.
"I am really happy that we are moving forward and not looking back. We are taking one match at a time and just really looking to peak at the right time, which is during Big Ten season," said Jardim.
The Spartans hit the road for the first time this spring season when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan. Match time is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18th.
