Six Spartan Wrestlers Place at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev.- Michigan State placed fifth out of 28 teams and six wrestlers placed in the top six at the 17th annual Reno Tournament of Champions. Dan Osterman (149) and David Cheza (165) both placed third individually.
Brenan Lyon and Brandon Fifield both lost their first two matches of the tournament at 125 pounds and 133 pounds respectively.
At 141 pounds, Brian Gibbs won his first match, but then lost to fifth-seed Nathan Pennesi of West Virginia in a 4-2 sudden victory decision. In the consolation bracket Gibbs recorded a decisions over both Luke McDonald of Cal Poly and Dalton Kelly of CSU Bakersfield. Gibbs finished the tournament 3-2.
Dan Osterman started off his day in the 149-pound division with a 15-4 major decision over Alex Schermersahl of Arizona State and a 4-2 decision over Damien Arrendondo of Cal Poly. Osterman lost to third-seed Donnie Vinson of Binghamton 3-1 in the third round. Osterman rattled off three straight victories in the consolation bracket that included a 10-8 decision over fourth-seed Scott Sakaguchi of Oregon State to finish in third place.
Anthony Jones Jr. was the fourth-seed in the 157-pound division and reached the semifinals with three straight victories that included a major decision and a fall. Jones then lost a 10-1 major decision to Justin Lister of Binghamton in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket Jones notched a 6-3 decision over second-seed Albert White of Oklahoma State. Jones placed fourth after losing by fall to third-seed RJ Pena of Oklahoma State in 4:52.
At 165 pounds David Cheza was the fifth-seed and made it to the semifinals with a 4-2 decision over Bryce Hammond of CSU Bakerfield and an 8-3 decision over fourth-seed Michael Cuthbertson of Boise State. Cheza lost in the semis to eventual champion Shane Onufer, 4-3. Cheza then beat Matt Kaylor of Binghamton 6-1 to take third place in the tournament.
Redshirt freshman Nick Proctor also competed at 165 pounds and went 3-2 in the tournament.
Sixth-seed Curran Jacobs reached the semifinals and placed fifth at 174 pounds. Jacobs defeated Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon in the fifth-place match and finished the tournament 4-2.
At 184 pounds sixth-seed Ian Hinton finished 2-2. Hinton defeated Spence Patrick of Stanford and Greg Isley of Air Force.
Third-seed Tyler Dickenson recorded a 12-4 major decision over Luke McPeek of Arizona State at 197 pounds but then had to forfeit his next two matches with an injury.
Nick McDiarmid also wrestled at 197 pounds for the Spartans and placed fifth. McDiarmid lost his first match but then won five consecutive matches and recorded a 5-4 decision over fifth-seed Kamron Jackson of Great Falls in the fifth place match.
Fifth-seed Michael McClure went 3-2 in the heavyweight division and lost to eventual third place winner Alan Gelogaev of Oklahom State. Steve Andrus also competed at heavyweight and finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. He made it to the fifth place match before having to forfeit due to injury.
The Spartans are now off for the holidays but will be back in action Jan. 8 against Penn State. The Spartans will take on the defending NCAA Champions at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich., at 2 p.m.
