EAST LANSING, Mich. - Through a partnership with the Detroit Tigers, the Central Michigan baseball program has announced it will host the second annual "Clash at Comerica" in Detroit versus Michigan State.
The Chippewas and Spartans played the first-ever collegiate baseball game at Comerica Park last season on April 20, 2011, with the Green and White claiming a historic 3-1 victory in just one hour and 53 minutes.
The second annual "Clash at Comerica" will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, with the first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.
"It was a goal of ours to make the `Clash at Comerica' continue as an annual event," Central Michigan head baseball coach Steve Jaksa said. "The Tigers are very instrumental in making this happen for a second year. This game will continue to add to the tradition that is Central Michigan and Michigan State baseball. [Michigan State head coach] Jake [Boss] and I have committed to doing things that will enhance baseball in the Midwest and for the second time fans will be able to come into a great venue in Comerica Park and see a great baseball game."
The two teams have met 100 times dating back to 1911, with CMU holding a 62-48 advantage over MSU. The Chippewas are the two-time defending Mid-American Conference West Division champions, while the Spartans are coming off a 36-21 season in which they claimed their first Big Ten title since 1979.
"Last year's `Clash at Comerica' was a great experience for our players and everyone involved," said Michigan State head coach Jake Boss. "We're excited to have another opportunity to play against a quality opponent in one of the best baseball parks in the country. I want to thank Central Michigan Athletics Director Dave Heeke and head coach Steve Jaksa for again taking the lead on this event and making it a reality for the second straight year. I also want to thank the Detroit Tigers, a first-class organization that made us feel welcome and did an excellent job hosting the game. I know the whole Spartan baseball program is looking forward to playing at Comerica Park next spring."
Tickets and more information on "Clash at Comerica" will be announced in the coming months.
