EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team finished in a tie for ninth at the 2011 Rees Jones Invitational on Tuesday at the Rees Jones Signature Course at Haig Point Golf Club. The Spartans shot a final round 23-over par 311 today to complete the week at 55-over 919 (306-302-311).
"Today was the first day all season that I felt we weren't at our best in regard to our execution and attitude," said Spartan head coach Casey Lubahn. "This course can really punish bad shots, and our guys got punished today.
"Dan Ellis and Chris Mory held it together on a tough day, and I am proud of their senior leadership right now. We will need the whole team to get it together in order to finish the fall with a strong showing in two weeks at Georgetown."
Senior Dan Ellis led the Spartans for the fourth time in four events this season. Ellis tied for 15th with a 9-over par 225 (74-76-75). Ellis led MSU with nine birdies in the tournament, good for fourth in the field.
Classmate Chris Mory equaled Ellis' score today and moved up into a tie for 20th at 12-over par 228 (78-75-75).Sophomore Carson Castellani finished in a tie for 47th this week, shooting a 21-over 237 (80-78-79), while junior Matthew Moseley and freshman McCormick Clouser were in a group tied for 50th at 22-over par 238.
Kennesaw State came from behind its second-straight Rees Jones Invitational with a two-day total of 30-over par 894. South Carolina, the tournament host, was second at 34-over 898, while Iowa State and Wake Forest tied for third at 36-over 900.
Iowa State's Nate McCoy set a tournament record with a 6-under par 210 total, to win the individual title by nine strokes.
The Spartans return to the course in two weeks for the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-18 in Beallsville, Md.
