EAST LANSING, Mich.-The Michigan State women's tennis team will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday, Oct. 1, to participate in the Wolverine Invitational. The tournament runs Friday through Sunday, Oct. 3, with play beginning at 10 a.m. each day at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Along with Michigan State and Michigan, Western Michigan, Purdue and Marquette will also be participating in the tournament. MSU hosted Marquette last weekend when it held the Spartan Invitation in East Lansing.
Each participant in the tournament, which features two singles draws, will play two singles matches on Friday regardless of the outcome of their first match. There will be two doubles matches held on Saturday, along with the winning round of singles matches. Sunday will feature one singles match and one doubles match.
"Our team is really excited," said assistant coach Shelley Godwin. "They gained a lot of momentum and confidence last weekend when we hosted our tournament. We got a lot of wins, a lot of good matches. They're excited to see that improve and carry over into next weekend."
In the Maize draw, freshman Marina Bohrer will face off against Big Ten opponent, Jenny Rabot from Purdue. Bohrer recorded three wins at the Spartan Invitational last weekend. Senior Whitney Wilson will also square off against Boilermaker when she competes against Mara Schmidt. Wilson and Bohrer combined for a total of three doubles wins at the Spartan Invitational. Freshman Katarina Lingl will play against Mimi Nguyen from Michigan. Lingl began her fall season with a singles win and two doubles wins alongside partner sophomore Michalea Silesova.
Silesova will represent MSU in the Blue draw when she goes up against Rachel Denny from Western Michigan. She tallied three singles wins last weekend in the Singles B draw. Joining her are freshmen Olga Chernova and Valentina Rusakova who will face off against Remi Martin from Purdue and Taylor Fournier from Michigan, respectively. Chernova accounted for two Spartan singles victories last weekend, while Rusakova won three singles matches.
