Women's Tennis Finishes First Day of Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State women's tennis team concluded the first day of the Spartan Invitational on Friday. MSU had a total of six singles victories and one double victory.
In Singles A action freshman Katarina Lingl fell to Brown from the University of Louisville, 7-5, 6-1. Senior Whitney Wilson also suffered a loss to Salas from the University of Detroit, 7-5, 7-6. In the Singles B draw, two Spartans won, with freshman Marina Bohrer defeating Ballus from IPFW, 6-0, 7-5. Sophomore Michaela Silesova posted a 6-2, 7-5, victory over Frey from the University of Toledo. Bohrer then defeated Miller from the University of Louisville, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Silesova posted another victory over Teyoprayitno from Chicago State University.
Freshman Olga Chernova fell to Thomson from Ball State 6-2, 6-4 in the Singles C draw. Rusakova defeated Vescoui from IPFW 6-3, 6-4. She then fell to Ecclestou from Bowling Green, 6-1, 6-2. Stockwell posted a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Kowalski from the California University of Pennsylvania in the Singles D draw. The junior then fell to Kiefer from IPFW 6-0, 6-2.
Wilson and Bohrer, recorded the Spartan's only doubles victory, with an 8-5 win over Kecht and Ballus of IPFW. In the Doubles A draw, Silesova and freshman Valentina Rusakova fell to Rush and Ruiz of Marquette University, 8-2.
The Doubles B draw saw Lingl and Chernova fall to Fernadez and Zheroleva from California University of Pennsylvania, 8-1. Junior Ashley Stockwell and freshman Jennifer Yen fell 8-6 to Hall and Rodriguez from Ball State in the Doubles C draw.
"I think we did pretty well," said head coach Simone Jardim. "Doubles started a little rough. I think we only got one doubles win today. Hopefully tomorrow we can come back and do better. As far as singles, I think we did a lot better especially from the freshman."
The Spartans return to action tomorrow at the Spartan Invitational with play beginning at 9 a.m. at Okemos High School and the Fee Tennis Courts.
