Bowling Green, Ohio - Michigan State picked up its sixth shutout in eight games - backstopped by junior keeper Jill Flietstra and got goals from junior Laura Heyboer and sophomore Olivia Stander to post a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green on Friday afternoon in Bowling Green, Ohio. MSU is now 5-2-1 overall with the victory.
"I was really happy with the way we came out with a lot of energy offensively," said head coach Tom Saxton after the victory. "We got a really good goal on a header from Laura Heyboer, and Olivia's goal in the second half was also a great score. We also did a really good job today with team defense, which is something that we wanted to focus on. It was a positive get the win today with the Big Ten opener on the schedule for us a week from now."
Heyboer's tally came in the 16th minute, after Hannah Peterson offered up a cross from the right side and Heyboer headed it in for her fifth goal of the season. Stander, who entered the game tied with Heyboer for the team lead in goal scoring, added her fifth of the season in the 51st minute off a pass from Annie Steinlage.
Michigan State dominated in shots (19-4) and corner kicks (10-2). BG keeper Alexa Arsenault made six saves for the Falcons, while Flietsta finished with two for MSU. Flietstra, who has shutouts in each of the last three contests, lowered her GAA to 0.72 and improved her save percentage to .854.
The Spartans will have a week of rest before traveling next weekend for their first Big Ten game of the season. MSU opens Conference play at preseason favorite Penn State on Sunday.
