East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer goalkeeper Jill Flietstra (Hudsonville, Mich.) has earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award, as announced on Monday (Sept. 13) by the Big Ten Conference.
The junior posted back-to-back shutouts last week to help extend MSU's record to 4-2-1 overall. Flietstra is the first Spartan to receive this honor for the 2010 season.
After making two saves in a 0-0, double-overtime draw against DePaul on Friday, Flietstra denied six shots in the Spartans' 3-0 win over Loyola Chicago on Sunday. Flietstra's 13th career shutout, and fifth of the season, ties her for fourth all-time in the MSU annals and eighth for career wins with 16. The keeper is also currently topping the Big Ten in shutouts (5) and saves (33).
Flietstra and the Spartans will travel for their next match, heading to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Falcons on Friday, at 5:00pm.
