Jack Newman Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf standout Jack Newman was selected as a 2009-10 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Newman is just the seventh Spartan to be honored and the second to win the award multiple times. In all, a total of 119 Division I student-athlete were honored this season.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
In addition to Newman, Jordan Ensrud joined Newman last season, John Koskinen was named an All-America Scholar in 2002 and 2003, Chris Lemmon was honored in 1995 and Dean Holland took home the award in 1985.
Newman ended his Spartan career third on the career scoring list at 73.59. A three-time Second Team All-Big Ten and two-time All-Midwest Region selection, he represented MSU at the NCAA Central Regional this season, tying for 11th. Newman's season scoring average of 72.03 was the second best in program history. He also led the Spartans with 109 birdies, six top-10 and nine top-20 finishes, and 15 sub-par rounds.
