EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State men's golf All-American Ryan Brehm won the 2010 Michigan Open on Thursday at the Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, Mich. Brehm fired a four-day total of 16-under par 268 (65-66-70-67) to win his second-straight title by two strokes.
Brehm becomes the first player to win back-to-back Michigan Opens since Scott Hebert won four consecutive from 1999-2002. Also, a former Spartan has won three of the last four, with Andrew Ruthkoski taking home the title in 2007. Brehm won $10,000 with the victory.
Brehm entered the final round in third place, two shots behind the lead, but his final round 4-under 67 vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard. For the week, Brehm totaled 21 birdies, played the par-4s at 11-under and the par-5's at 6-under.
Brehm, a Mt. Pleasant, Mich., native, became MSU's 13th All-American selection in 2008, earning honorable mention recognition by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was a four-time member of the All-Big Ten teams, having been a first team selection as a sophomore and senior, and a second team choice as a freshman and junior. In addition, he placed second at the Big Ten Championships three times and was a three-time selection to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. Brehm ended his Michigan State career with five individual titles, including a school record four as a senior, and a scoring average of 73.30, both program records.
Two other former Spartans finished in the top-10, as Randy Hutchison tied for fifth at 10-under par 274 (66-68-75-65) and Andrew Ruthkoski was eighth at 9-under 275 (68-65-71-71).
