MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - In their final non-conference game of the year, the Michigan State baseball team racked up 19 hits en route to a 16-9 win over Central Michigan on Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant. At 33-17 on the year, the Spartans have posted their highest win total since the 2004 team also won 33 games.
MSU did most of its damage early on as it pushed across 12 runs in the four innings. Seniors Eli Boike and Chris Roberts each went 3-for-5 with three RBI to pace the Spartan offense. Catcher Seth Williams had a season-high three hits as well, and also drive in a run.
Tony Wieber threw four complete innings of shutout ball as he allowed just two hits and struck out three as he improved to 4-0 on the year.
Consecutive RBI singles by Roberts and Boike gave MSU a 2-0 lead in the first before putting up five more runs in the second to make the score 8-0. MSU sent eight hitters to the plate in the second and Torsten Boss drove in the first run of the inning with a single through the left side that scored Williams. A CMU error later allowed Boss to score before Jeff Holm drove in another run with an RBI single. Roberts capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run homer to right field.
CMU got three runs back in the bottom of the second, but a two-RBI double by Jonathan Roof highlighted a three-run third for the Green and White as it extended the lead to 10-3.
The Chippewas scored twice in the bottom of the third and the two teams traded runs in the fourth inning before each team went scoreless in the fifth.
With MSU leading, 12-8, in the top of the sixth, Boike hit his team-leading eighth home run of the year to build MSU's lead to six runs. Williams came around to scored another run in the inning on a wild pitch to make the score 15-8.
Jordan Keur, who got the start in left field and went 2-for-4, drove in his first run since April 20 in the eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle to make the score 16-8.
CMU, now 30-20, added a final run in the ninth.
Andrew Waszak started on the hill for MSU and went four complete innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, off 10 hits. He also struck out six, one shy of his career high, before being replaced by fellow freshman Wieber in the fifth inning.
The Spartans next head to Evanston, Ill., for their final regular-season series of the year as they face Northwestern for three games beginning on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.
