STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - For the second consecutive game, the Michigan State baseball team allowed over 20 hits as it fell to Penn State, 22-5, on Saturday afternoon in State College, Pa. The loss drops MSU to 28-13 and even in the Big Ten at 7-7. Penn State improved to 19-23 and 6-8 in conference play.
The Nittany Lions exploded for 25 hits in Friday's win and on Saturday, they picked up where they left off - scoring five runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Glantz had a two-RBI single in the inning for PSU.
Bo Felt helped Michigan State respond in the top of the second with a single up the middle that scored Torsten Boss and Jeff Holm, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
After Penn State made it 8-2 with two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth, the Spartans chopped the lead to 8-4 with a two-out, RBI double by Holm. Boss followed with an RBI single to right field.
Just when it looked like MSU again got back in the game, Penn State put it out of reach by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 15-4 lead. PSU tacked on a total of seven more runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
MSU starting pitcher Kurt Wunderlich (7-2) had his shortest outing of the year as he allowed 15 runs (13 earned) off 12 hits in four complete innings.
Penn State's Mike Wanamaker went 7.2 innings for the win.
Holm finished the game 3-for-4.
The two teams will meet in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
