EAST LANSING, Mich. - With the seniors Kyle Bounds and Nick Palmieri receiving at-large bids on Wednesday evening, the Michigan State wrestling team will send a total of six student-athletes to this year's NCAA Championships. Bounds (165) and Palmieri (184) will join Franklin Gomez (133), David Cheza (149), Anthony Jones Jr. (157) and Ian Hinton (174), who all earned automatic berths as a result of their finishes at the Big Ten Championships, at this year's NCAA Championships.
"To get both guys in the tournament is great," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "It's particularly satisfying for both of them because they are seniors. Both guys have wrestled long and hard and been very committed to Michigan State University. It's very satisfying to see them have the opportunity to go compete in the best tournament in the county."
For Bounds, Palmieri and Cheza, it will be their first appearances NCAA Championships. Gomez captured the 2009 National Championship at 133 pounds last season and Hinton and Jones both competed in last year's event as well.
It marks the first time since 2003 that the Spartans have had at least six wrestlers compete in the NCAA Championships.
"The team wrestled well last weekend," said Minkel. "It's nice to know that were going in the direction and we're doing what we should be doing. It's a result of hard work by the wrestlers and the staff."
The 2010 NCAA Championships will be held March 18-20 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
