EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer goalkeeper Jill Flietstra (Hudsonville, Mich.) has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday (Oct. 4) by the Big Ten Conference. This is Flietstra's second conference honor this year - her first came on September 13.
The junior keeper notched back-to-back shutouts, posting nine saves in two games to earn her second weekly award in less than one month. Flietstra turned away four saves in the Spartans' 2-0 win over Indiana on Friday, following with a five-save performance against Purdue on Sunday.
Flietstra now has eight shutouts this season, good for first in the Big Ten and a tie for second most in a single season in Michigan State history. She is also leading the conference in saves per game, with an average of 4.55, and is second in total saves, with 50.
The Michigan State women's soccer team will travel to Ann Arbor this weekend to face archrival Michigan. Kickoff on Saturday (Oct. 9) is at 7:00 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Complex.
