
MSU, Iowa End in 1-1 Deadlock

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer played to a 1-1 tie with Iowa in their final home game at DeMartin Stadium for the 2010 regular season. The Spartans are now 3-3-3 in the Big Ten and 9-5-4 overall on the season.

With eight shots, there were plenty of scoring opportunities for the Spartans in the first half, but the first goal of the matchup didn't come until the 59th minute of play. Megan Pines earned her first goal of the season when she redirected a pass from Cara Freeman into the right corner of the Hawkeye net. Katelin Chaklos was given the secondary assist, her first helper this season.
The Hawkeyes tied MSU 1-1 in the 78th minute of competition. Jade Grimm finished a pass from Keli McLaughlin into the bottom left corner past Spartan goalie Elizabeth Watza.
Pines had an chance to win the game with 20 seconds left on the clock in regulation, but the ball was barely tipped over the net by the fingertips of Iowa's goalkeeper, and the teams played on into overtime.
In her second outing of the season, Watza notched five saves against the Hawkeyes. Meanwhile, Laura Heyboer had multiple chances to claim the title of MSU's all-time goal scorer in Sunday's contest. The junior had six shots, including one in the 4th minute that ricocheted off the crossbar.
The Spartans held a 22-10 edge in shots in the game, and Iowa keeper Emily Moran made 14 stops, including five combined in the two overtime periods. MSU had nine corners to just two for the Hawkeyes.
Michigan State will wrap up the regular season next Friday evening at Ohio State in a 7:30 start.
