
Spartans Conclude Fall Play with USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team will wrap up its fall season with the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships this weekend. The tournament will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., with play running from Oct. 21-26.
The tournament is set up in a double elimination format. On Thursday, Oct. 21, two rounds of qualifying singles will be held. The final round of qualifying singles will start at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Friday afternoon will be the start of doubles play with two rounds of qualifying rounds starting at 2 p.m.
Senior Whitney Wilson and freshman Marina Bohrer will represent the Green and White at the championships this week. Wilson has a bye the first round of the singles qualifying round. Bohrer will start off in the singles main draw.
The Spartans will also be represented in the ITA Second Chance tournament which is hosted by Western Michigan. Freshman Katarina Lingl, red-shirt sophomore Dana Guentert and sophomore Michaela Silesova will compete in the tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Spartans have competed in three invitational tournaments this season including the Wolverine Invitational, the Spartan Invitational and most recently the Wildcat. During the Wildcat Invitational, MSU recorded seven singles victories and one doubles win.
Freshman Olga Chernova tallied two singles victories for the Spartans, defeating Ariel Morton from LSU, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6), and prevailing 6-4, 7-6 (2) over Christina Harazin of Iowa. Silesova also won twice in singles when she topped both Samantha Kaneta of DePaul, 6-2, 6-0, and April Kerr of Western Michigan, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Bohrer downed Kaitlin Burns from LSU, 6-3, 6-0, for her only singles win of the weekend. The tournament also saw Lingl defeat Natalie Edell of Northwestern, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Wilson recorded one singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Nivia of Western Michigan. Bohrer and Wilson posted the only doubles win of the weekend when they dropped Majerick and Escobar of Iowa, 8-6.
