East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team traveled to Bowling Green on Wednesday afternoon to tangle with the Falcons, and came away with a 2-1 non-conference victory. The Spartans, ranked 16th in the latest NSCAA poll and seventh in the latest RPI rating, improved to 11-3-0 overall.
Rubin Bega's goal in the 77th minute stood as the game-winner for the visiting Spartans. His tally was unassisted, as Bega put in a free kick from 25 yards out into the left upper 90.
MSU had more shots (14-10), shots on net (5-2), and corner kicks (6-5), but the teams were even in fouls (12 a side). . Avery Steinlage made one save to pick up his 11th victory of the season. Counterpart Miguel Rosales made three saves for Bowling Green.
Neither team scored in the contest until the second half, when scoring seemingly came fast and furious. Bowling Green got on the board first; Tanner Fink put a shot on net that hit the post, and Dusko Topolic put back the rebound for his third score of the season. BG's goal came at 59:13.
Junior Brent Rosendall put his team-best seventh goal on the board in the 65th minute to tie the game. Rosendall's shot came from about 15 yards out after getting the ball from a BG defender miscue.
Michigan State returns to Big Ten play this Sunday, when it hosts Indiana at DeMartin Stadium. The seven Spartan seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony, and MSU will attempt to break the DeMartin Stadium attendance record by drawing 3,000 fans to Sunday's game.
