
Women's Tennis Completes First Day of Wolverine Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team recorded seven singles victories during the first day of the Wolverine Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1. The tournament is hosted by the University of Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In the Maize draw, freshman Marina Bohrer held out against Jenny Rabot from Purdue to record a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory. She then faced Maggie Remynse of Western Michigan, prevailing 7-5, 7-6. Senior Whitney Wilson started off with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mara Schimt of Purdue, but then fell to Brook Bolende of Michigan, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Katarina Lingl suffered a loss to Mimi Ngyen of Michigan by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
The Blue draw saw freshman Olga Chernova tally two victories on the day. Chernova's first came over Remi Martin of Purdue, 6-2, 6-0, before topping Rachel Hush from Marquette, 7-5, 6-2. Freshman Valentina Rusakova recorded two victories as well when she downed Taylor Fournier from Michigan, 6-2, 6-4, and beat Jill Pastunink of Western Michigan, 7-5, 7-5. Sophomore Michaela Silesova suffered a loss to Rachel Denny from Western Michigan in a match that went three sets and ended with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow for the second day of singles play and begin two rounds of doubles. In the first round, Wilson and Bohrer will meet Sulahian and Crister from Michigan. Silesova and Rusakova will face off against Kerr and Denny from Western Michigan. Round two will see Lingl and Chernova square off against Wig and Fournier of Michigan. The duo of Wilson and Bohrer will compete in round two as well and are matched up against Dushkin and Martin of Purdue.
