Ensrud, Newman Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf student-atheltes Jordan Ensrud and Jack Newman were named 2008-09 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Both Spartans earn the award for the first time and become the first MSU golfer since 2003 to be recognized. In all, a total of 109 Division I student-athlete were honored.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
In addition to Ensrud and Newman in the Spartan record books, John Koskinen was named an All-America Scholar in 2002 and 2003, Chris Lemmon was honored in 1995 and Dean Holland took home the award in 1985.
Enrsud, a recent graduate from Anoka, Minn., competed in nine events for the Spartans this season and was fifth on the team with a 75.10 scoring average. In all, Ensrud, also an Academic All-Big Ten selection, had two top-10 finishes and three top-20 showings.
Newman, a rising senior from Des Moines, Iowa, was one of two Spartans to compete in all 13 events this season, leading the team with a 72.87 scoring average, fourth-best on the MSU single-season list. He also had team bests in top-five (4), top-10 (7) and top-20 (9) finishes. A Second Team All-Big Ten honoree for the second-straight season, Newman was also named to the PING All-Midwest Region team, an Academic All-Big Ten selection and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
