EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State men's golf All-American Ryan Brehm won the 2009 Michigan Open on Thursday at the Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, Mich. Brehm fired a four-day total of 20-under par 264 (63-68-64-69) to win by eight strokes.
Brehm wins the Michigan Open for the first time and is the second former Spartan to win in the last three seasons, as Andrew Ruthkoski took home the title in 2007. Brehm won $10,000 with the victory.
Brehm's length off the tee was advantageous this week at the 6,863-yard, par-71 layout. He totaled 21 birdies and three eagles, two of which on par-4s in his opening round, over the 72 holes. Brehm also played the three par-5s at nine-under par this week.
Brehm, a Mt. Pleasant, Mich., native, became MSU's 13th All-American selection in 2008, earning honorable mention recognition by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was a four-time member of the All-Big Ten teams, having been a first team selection as a sophomore and senior, and a second team choice as a freshman and junior. In addition, he placed second at the Big Ten Championships three times and was a three-time selection to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team. Brehm ended his Michigan State career with five individual titles, including a school record four as a senior, and a scoring average of 73.30, both program records.
Rising sophomore Dan Ellis also had a successful run at the Michigan Open this week, tying for 11th at one-over par 285 (75-73-70-67). Ellis moved up from a tie for 43rd into 11th on the final day with his four-under 67. He totaled 16 birdies for the tournament, including seven on Thursday.
