BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana pitcher Matt Bashore struck out 10, scattered three hits and held the Michigan State baseball scoreless through eight innings as the Hoosiers downed the Spartans, 6-1, on Friday (May 15) afternoon in Bloomington, Ind., sending MSU to its fifth-consecutive loss.
Spartan starter A.J. Achter (3-5) went six complete innings to keep the Spartans in the game, allowing three runs off six hits. MSU's offense struggled to provide support by generating just two hits through seven innings.
With two outs and runners on the corners in the third, Indiana scored all it would need with consecutive base hits to right field from Alex Dickerson and Kipp Schutz to make the game 2-0.
The Hoosiers led 3-0 in the eighth and then added three more runs off MSU reliever Kurt Wunderlich, keyed by a two-RBI double from shortstop Jake Dunning.
The Spartans managed just six base runners through eight innings and weren't given any help by Bashore as he walked just one batter and allowed one to reach on a wild pitch.
The Green and White (22-29, 12-11) avoided the shutout in the ninth with a two-out single from Bo Felt that drove in Jonathan Roof and made the final score 6-1.
MSU and IU will play their final game of the series, and of the regular season, on Saturday (May 16) at 1 p.m. Each team has locked up a spot in next week's Big Ten Tournament.
