Women's Tennis Drops Two Big Ten Road Matches

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (8-11, 1-5 Big Ten) fell, 4-3, to Penn State on Saturday, for its second five-hour match in a week. Pacing the Spartans at both No. 1 singles and doubles was senior Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.), who earned convincing wins over both of her Penn State opponents. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 1-5 in road matchups, while Penn State improves to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play.
Getting out to a quick start on the day was the doubles tandem of Kebler and freshman Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia). The 74th-ranked doubles tandem extended its winning streak to five matches as it defeated Sarah Lotto and Monika Mical, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
Kebler continued her doubles success as she defeated Mical at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, to snap her three-match singles losing streak. Also earning a win in singles competition was freshman Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.). After dropping the first set to Maria Prishlvak, 6-7 (2), Guentert went on to defeat Prishlvak in the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-6 (2), extending her current winning streak to five-matches. The win makes Guentert a perfect 3-0 at the No. 5 singles position.
Earning the Spartans' final singles win was senior Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa). Milosavljevic came out strong against Denisa Zobeideh at No. 3 singles, as she went on to defeat Zobeideh, 6-4, 6-4. The win marked Milosavljevic's first in the No. 3 singles position this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State women's tennis team (8-12, 1-6 Big Ten) wrapped up the weekend by falling, 5-2, to No. 35 Ohio State in both school's first outdoor match of the season. The Spartans received singles contributions from both Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.). Both players defeated their singles opponents in the match. The Buckeyes move to 12-6 on the season with a 5-1 record in Big Ten play, while the Spartans remain winless against ranked opponents.
"We are fighting better as a team and learning to adapt," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We are looking to peak at the end of the season and be able to surprise some Big Ten teams."
Extending her current winning streak to six-matches was Guentert after she picked up a win at No. 5 singles. Despite dropping the first set to Julie Blackmore, 6-3, Guentert rallied to defeat Blackmore in the second set, 6-4, and the super-tiebreaker, 13-11. With the win, Guentert moves to 4-0 in the No. 5 singles position this season.
Milosavljevic earned her 14th win of the season when she defeated Cami Hubbs at No. 3 singles. Milosavljevic came out strong in the first set, earning the 7-5 win. However, Hubbs won the second set, 6-2. With the match having been already decided, the two were forced to a super-tiebreak. Milosavljevic proved to be too much for Hubbs as she won the tiebreaker, 10-7. The win is her second in a row at No. 3 singles after winning at Penn State yesterday.
The Spartans will return to action on Sunday, April 23, for their last home match of the season when they face Purdue at 11 a.m. The Spartans' three seniors - Ana Milosavljevic, Stephanie Kebler and Marianne Eelens - will be honored at the match.
