DETROIT, Mich. - Exactly three weeks after playing in the NCAA Championship game at Ford Field, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo was across the street at Comerica Park, delivering the ceremonial first pitch prior to Monday's Detroit Tigers-New York Yankees contest. Before a crowd of nearly 30,000, Izzo delivered the pitch to first base coach Andy Van Slyke.
Izzo traveled to the game with a contingent of basketball staff and families along with athletic department personnel and a group of local media members. Izzo's trip included interviews with Detroit media, a pre-game appearance on Tigers Live with Trevor Thompson on FSN Detroit, and a private 15-minute clubhouse conversation with Tiger manager Jim Leyland.
The event also served as an opportunity for Izzo to reflect on Michigan State's successful run to the national championship game, and recall the outpouring of support the team received from Detroit.
"It's great to be back down in the city," said Izzo. "I don't think I'll ever forgot how good fans were to us and how it was embraced down here."
