MIDLAND, Mich. - Central Michigan scored four runs in the ninth inning and rallied to down the Michigan State baseball team, 7-6, on Wednesday (April 22) night at Dow Diamond in Midland, Mich.
The Chippewas' first three hitters reached with singles in the ninth to load the bases with no outs and then a two-RBI double from Billy Anderson made it a one run game at 6-5. Tyler Kipke then followed with an RBI single to tie the game at six. After an intentional walk to load the bases, reliever Peter Wolff plunked Casey Ingle to bring in the winning run and give CMU a 7-6 win.
The Spartans led off the game with three consecutive singles to load the bases with two outs but could only produce one run - a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Jonathan Roof.
With the score 1-0 MSU in the fourth, the Spartans again loaded the bases to start the inning and this time they capitalized. The fourth batter of the inning was Jeff Holm who drove the first pitch he saw into the right field gap, scoring Eric Roof and Jonathan Roof. Two batters later, a two-out single by Eli Boike brought in Bo Felt and Holm to clear the bases and give the Spartans a 5-0 lead.
Boike picked up his third RBI of the game in the sixth on a fielder's choice, extending the Spartan lead to 6-0.
Starter Tony Bucciferro and reliever A.J. Dunn combined to hold the Chippewas to just two hits through the first five innings but CMU eventually got on the board and chopped the Spartan lead in half with three runs in the sixth. CMU scored their first run on a bases-loaded ground out and then Dale Cornstubble smacked a two-RBI single off Clay VanderLaan.
CMU threatened by loading the bases again in the seventh but Kurtis Frymier got a ground force-out at home and then a strike out to end the inning and keep the game 6-3.
Wolff suffered his first loss of the season for MSU (14-23) while Havey Martin picked up the win for CMU (18-21).
Michigan State will hit the road for a three-game set with Iowa beginning Friday (April 24) at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday's and Sunday's games with the Hawkeyes will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
