COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State baseball team fell to Ohio State, 6-1, Sunday (April 12) afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. Three Buckeye pitchers combined to limit MSU to just four hits as OSU (26-7, 6-3) swept the three-game series.
Jonathan Roof put MSU up, 1-0, in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly but the Buckeyes quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs off four hits to take a 2-1 lead.
Junior Kyle Corcoran started on the mound for the Green and White and sat down seven of the next eight OSU hitters he faced before the Buckeyes got to him in the fifth and scored twice off RBI-singles form Zach Hurley and Michael Stephens.
OSU pitching was tough on the Spartans all day as starter Eric Best allowed just one base runner after surrendering the lone run to MSU in the second inning. Reliever Drew Rucinski followed and was equally as effective in silencing the Spartan bats as he held MSU hitless in his 3.0 innings of work and issued just one walk.
OSU also tacked on solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make the final, 6-1.
Corcoran went 6.0 innings and surrendered five runs, all earned, off nine hits. The lefty also recorded four strikeouts. Best got the win for OSU and improved to 6-1.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday (April 15) when they host Western Michigan at McLane Baseball Stadium at 3:05 p.m.
