DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite a career-high five strikeouts and excellent performance from starter Nolan Moody, the Michigan State baseball team fell, 2-0, to Georgia State on Friday (March 6) afternoon in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was the Spartans' first game of the Bethune-Cookman Invitational Tournament.
"Our pitching was very good today, Nolan did a nice job," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. "Offensively, we struggled and that is something we need to improve."
After a leadoff double in the first by the Panthers' Theo Asher, Moody got out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout, lineout and then fantastic diving catch from second baseman A.J. Shindler to keep the game scoreless.
Georgia State took the lead, 1-0, in the fourth off one hit and one MSU error and then made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth off an RBI single by Carl Moniz.
After the first two batters reached in the sixth, Moody helped his cause with a 1-6-3 double play and then got another excellent diving catch for the third out, this time from Eli Boike in centerfield.
In his third start of the season, Moody went 6.0 innings and gave up six hits.
The Spartans put runners on in the sixth, seventh, and ninth but were unable push the tying runs across. For the game, MSU and Georgia State each left a total of eight on base.
Kyle Corcoran started the seventh inning on the hill for MSU and pitched well, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday (March 7) at the Bethune-Cookman Invitational Tournament with two games. MSU will take on Xavier at 11 a.m. and the host Wildcats at 7 p.m.
