SEATTLE, Wash. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (6-8, 0-2 Big Ten) fell, 7-0, to No. 36 Washington in their first match in Seattle on Friday, March 13. With the win, the Huskies are now 9-5 overall, while the Spartans fall to 6-8 on the season. This marked the second overall meeting for the two squads, as the Spartans earned the win last year over the Huskies in East Lansing, 6-1.
In the most highly contest for the Spartans in singles action was Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia). Ivanova came out to pick up the first set in quick fashion, 6-1, over Washington's Samantha Smith. However, Smith rallied back in the second set to square the match at one apiece, 6-3. After earning the second set, the Husky stormed back in the third set to clinch the sweep in a super-tie breaker, 10-5.
Also in a three-set thriller was Lindsey Lonergan (Cincinnati, Ohio). Lonergan shrugged off her early doubles loss as she earned the first set victory over Washington's Aleksandra Krsljanin, 7-5. The Husky, however, finished strong against the Spartan, picking up the second set, 6-0, and the super-tie breaker, 10-5.
