Women's Tennis Rounds Out Day Two of Purdue Invite

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team concluded the second day of action at the Purdue Invite on Saturday, Nov. 7. Overall, the Spartans earned four wins over the course of the day.
Doubles action saw success from one Spartan, junior Whitney Wilson (Evanston, Ind.) partnered with Marquette's G. Hush to top MSU's senior Christine Miliken (Traverse City, Mich.) and Barry also of Marquette, 8-6.
The two other doubles teams for the Green and White fell to Marquette with the same score, 8-6.
Freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) picked up a win for State in singles action over Fischer of Marquette, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) posted two wins in singles action. First she defeated Dushkina of Purdue, 6-3, 6-4, and then outlasted Ruiz of Marquette, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Barton lost a tough match to Sammons of Purdue, going into a three-set match, but falling, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
"This tournament has provided a great opportunity for the girls to get competitive matches in as we finish off the fall season," said assistant coach Shelley Godwin. "As a team, we were able to work on specific fundamentals we have been focusing on, as well as gaining invaluable experience and confidence."
The Spartans will finish fall play tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 8, by concluding competition at the Purdue Invite. Singles action will begin at 9 a.m. with Michigan State taking on Penn State.
