Women's Tennis Concludes Day One of Purdue Invite

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team earned five wins on Friday, Nov. 6, to open up the first day of competition at the Purdue Invite in West Lafayette, Ind. Wins were collected in both singles and doubles action.
The Spartans had a slow start as they took on Purdue, falling in all three doubles matches. Freshman Nicole Herzog (Manilia, Brazil) and sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) partnered against Dushkina and Martin of Purdue, but fell in a close match, 9-7.
Things turned around quickly for MSU as Herzog and Ivanova went on to defeat Roth and Prishylak of Penn State, 8-6. Also picking up a win for the Green and White in doubles action was the pairing of freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) and junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) who dominated Simidian and McCarthy of Penn State, 8-1.
Herzog and Ivanova both picked up wins in singles as well. Herzog outlasted Prishylak of Penn State, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(7), while Ivanova defeated Penn State's Roth, 6-4, 6-0.
Senior Christine Miliken (Traverse City, Mich.) also picked up a singles win for MSU when she fought through a three-set match to defeat Hefter of Penn State, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Barton and Wilson both fell in singles action to their Penn State opponents.
Michigan State will continue action tomorrow in doubles at 9 a.m. as it takes on Marquette. Singles play will resume at approximately 10 a.m. with competition against Marquette followed by a match-up against Purdue at 3 p.m.
