
Cross Country Concludes Action at Big Ten Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Michigan State cross country team finished action at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Blue/White Golf Course on the campus of Penn State University. As a team, the women finished fifth with a score of 137, while the men turned in an eighth-place finish with a score of 188. This marks the ninth consecutive time the women have finished in the top five as a team.
Finishing sixth overall for the women and earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors was junior Emily MacLeod (Loveland, Ohio), who turned in a time of 20:41.
Finishing 15th, and second for the women, was junior Carlie Green (Milford, Mich.), crossing the finish line in 21:14. Sophomore Rebekah Smeltzer (Monroe, Mich.) finished third for the Spartans with her time of 21:27. Rounding out the female scores was sophomore Tiffany Abrahamian (Rochester, Mich.) and freshman Kristen Smith (Clarkston, Mich.), finishing with a time of 22:02 and 22:09, respectively.
Winning the women's team championship was host Penn State with a score of 71. Senior Bridget Franek from Penn State took home first-place honors with her time of 20:03.
For the men, sophomore Josh McAlary (Jackson, Mich.) paced the men with his time of 25:59.5, good for 22nd overall. Freshman Ben Miller (Brooklyn, Mich.) was the second male to cross the finish line for MSU, turning in a time of 26:09.7. Juniors Spencer Beatty (Harbor Springs, Mich.) and Patrick Grosskopf (Corunna, Mich.) finished third and fourth for the Spartans with times of 26:44.1 and 26:44.7, respectively. Senior Max Goldak (Chesterton, Ind.) rounds out the top-five male finishers with his time of 26:55.3.
Wisconsin took home the team crown on the men's side with its score of 26. Minnesota's junior Hassan Mead finished first overall with his time of 25:00.2.
The Spartans are back in action Nov. 14 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by Indiana University. Racing is slated to begin at 12 p.m. ET.
