EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Wisconsin on a rain-soaked field Friday (Oct. 23) afternoon at DeMartin Stadium. MSU is now 8-3-4 (1-3-2) while Wisconsin improved to 7-5-2 (3-1-1).
"It was disappointing," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We put a lot of new people in a lot of new positions due to the injuries we've had and I thought they did their jobs and stepped up today. It came down to the play in the offensive end by both teams and Wisconsin capitalized on our mistake and we didn't do the same at the other end."
MSU played without Laura Heyboer and Jordan Mueller, who both missed the game with injuries.
Wisconsin's Paige Adams put the Badgers on the board in the 24th minute, taking a pass from Laurie Nosbusch and scoring from 10 yards out.
Prior to the Wisconsin goal, Katelin Chaklos had the best chance of the half for the Spartans, but her shot from an angle on the left side missed the net wide.
With the rain showers continuing through the second half, offensive opportunities for both teams proved hard to come by.
MSU's best scoring chance of the half came in the 77th minute when Kelsey Kassab sent a ball through the air in the middle that Lauren Hill was able to get a foot on, but her deflection just missed the net.
"We've got to get this out of our minds and get ready for Sunday's game," Saxton said. "We are excited to be on the Big Ten Network and its alumni day so we need to come out and represent."
The Spartans will look to bounce back on Sunday (Oct. 25) when they host Minnesota at 12 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Sunday will also be alumni day for the MSU women's soccer program.
