
Cross Country Finishes Strong at Michigan Intercollegiate Open

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country team continued action this afternoon in Grand Rapids, competing with 27 other collegiate teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Open hosted by Calvin College.
The nationally ranked Spartan women claimed fifth place as a team with junior Elizabeth Watson (Lansing, Mich.) leading the way. Watson finished 16th overall in the women's 5K race with a time of 18:43. Classmate Jennifer Yee (Troy, Mich.) finished second for the Spartan women and 28th overall, clocking in at 19:06. Rounding out the top 30 was redshirt senior Diane Hamilton (Battle Creek, Mich.), who finished six seconds later with a time of 19:12.
Junior Megan Maceratini from Grand Valley State University finished in first-place overall, turning in a time of 17:58, and leading her team to first-place team finish. GVSU also claimed five of the top-six spots in the women's championship race.
The Spartan men also turned in an impressive showing as well, taking seventh place as a team and finishing with three runners in the top 50. Placing first for the Spartan men, and taking 29th overall, was freshman Kevin Yarnell (Maumee, Ohio), crossing the finish line with a time of 26:16. The second finisher for the team in the 8K race, and 33rd overall, was sophomore Mike Katseferas (Pinckney, Mich.), clocking in at 26:20. Taking third place for the team, and 46th overall, was sophomore Aaron Winter (Rockford, Ill.), clocking a time of 26:42.
The University of Michigan men's cross country team finished with three runners in the top five, with redshirt junior Peter Christmas finishing first overall with a time of 25:07, and leading his team to a first-place overall finish as well.
The Spartan cross country team will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. next weekend to compete in the Pre-National meet on Saturday, Oct. 17. For complete coverage visit msuspartans.com.
