EAST LANSING, Mich. -

Behind a fourth consecutive shutout by junior goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege, the Michigan State women's soccer team defeated Loyola, 2-0, Sunday (Sept. 7) afternoon at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field. The fourth consecutive shutout ties a school record for consecutive shutout wins. The 2002 Spartans started the season 4-0, blanking all four opponents.
The Spartans pressured Loyola early on, with their best chance coming in the 13th minute when Lauren Sinacola delivered a perfect pass a streaking Kelsey Tait whose redirection just caught the outreached hand of Loyola goalkeeper Katie Groesch.
MSU capitalized on Sinacola's next cross in the 33rd minute, this time off a corner kick as Cara Freeman headed in her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
"I thought we played well after getting off to a shaky start. As the game went on we came together," Sinacola said.
The Ramblers came out strong to start second half, with their best scoring chance coming in the 53rd minute off a header by Maggie Doe but Spartan goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege was in perfect position and came down with the ball.
As the second half continued, the Spartans regained control of play and scored an insurance marker in the 64th minute when freshman Laura Heyboer scored her third goal of the weekend and team-leading sixth goal of the season from inside the box. Lauren Hill and Cara Freeman picked up assists on the goal.
"I thought it was a good effort. The thing I was excited about was that we got better as the game went along," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "As the game went on, we got more organized and composed and were able to impose our will."
Wrege's shutout streak now stands at a remarkable 417:10 after making six more stops on Sunday. In 439:22 of play this season she has allowed just one goal.
MSU's 5-0 start ties a school record for the second-best start in school history. Only the 2004 squad opened the season better at 6-0.
The Spartans return to action with two home games next weekend beginning on Friday (Sept. 12) when they take on Western Michigan at 4 p.m.
