Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing in Season Debut

EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State women's tennis team opened its fall schedule Saturday, hosting the Spartan Invitational at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Freshman Ashley Stockwell (Okemos, Mich.) went undefeated on the day, topping both Molly Drake of Cleveland State and Alyssa Carlson of Akron in her collegiate debut. On the day, MSU won 12 matches, two in doubles play and 10 in singles competition.
"There were a lot of positives that I saw from the team and we learned a lot from the competition we faced today," said head coach Simone Jardim. "I'm excited to work more with the girls as we head deeper into fall tournament play."
The doubles tandem of freshman Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.) and sophomore Ally Wickman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) started the day by winning their match in the first session, topping Isabell Raich and Kristina Koprcina from Marshall, 8-5. Lindsey Lonergan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) followed that with an 8-3 victory over Stefanie Menoff and Libby Harrison from Bowling Green. The win gave the Spartans their second doubles victory on the day.
In the next session, the Spartans dominated the first round of singles competition, winning seven of their eight matches, all against competitors from Akron. All seven wins were earned in straight sets while senior Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Manon Noe (Liancourt, France) topped each of Akron's top players in the second session.
Also earning victories were freshman Tara Harasim (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and freshman Tara Hayes (Shelby Township, Mich.). Harasim defeated Oksana Kuyso of Louisville in straight sets, winning both, 6-4. Hayes also topped Kuyso 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartan Invitational will continue at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
