EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State rising senior Randy Hutchison placed third and was the low amateur this week at the 91st Michigan Open, held June 9-12 at The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Hutchison, a first-team All-Big Ten selection in the spring, tallied a nine-under par 278 (66-66-72-74), to finish four stroke behind former PGA Tour professional Tom Gillis.
Hutchison, Gillis and second-place finisher Brian Stuard, a member of the Nationwide Tour, battled in the final group on Thursday for the prestigious title. The Michigan Open, run by the Michigan PGA, is one of the oldest and most prestigious state championships in the nation.
Three of Hutchison's teammates from this season made the second day cut this week, which limited the field from 234 amateurs and professionals down to 85. Hutchison's classmate Steve Cuzzort tied for 18th at five-over par 292 (74-70-69-79), while recent graduate Ryan Brehm tied for 49th at 13-over 300 (74-72-74-80) and rising sophomore Philip Snow tied for 60th at 15-over par 302 (72-73-75-80).
