
MSU Drops 14-6 Slugfest At Central Michigan

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - In a game in which 42 players (23 Spartans) saw action and no pitcher appeared for more than two innings, Central Michigan slugged past the Michigan State baseball team, 14-6, Tuesday at CMU's Theunissen Stadium. In all, 16 pitchers - including nine Spartan hurlers - made an appearance. Junior Eric Roof and freshman Jeff Holm each had two hits and two runs.
Senior Steve Gerstenberger and freshman Jonathan Roof each had two hits, as well. Matt Faiman went 3-for-6 with three RBI to lead CMU. Central Michigan's James Teas (1-1) was credited with the win. Sophomore lefty Kyle Corcoran (1-2) took the loss for MSU.
Wild MSU pitching led to three Chippewa runs in the bottom of the second. Two of the innings three runs crossed the plate on wild pitches. Stovall and Tyler Kipke each scored on a wild pitch. Matt Faiman had an infield RBI single in the inning.
Michigan State pulled to within 4-2 with a run in the top of the third inning. Eckerle singled and scored on a single by freshman Jeff Holm. CMU extended the lead to 6-2 in the fifth on a two-run single by Digati.
Senior Justin Potes singled and scored in the top of the sixth to trim the Chippewas' lead to 6-3. CMU strung together five singles to score three runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
Day and Eric Roof each smacked doubles to spark a three-run Spartan seventh. Senior Brandon Doherty picked up a pinch hit RBI single and Potes had a sac fly as MSU trimmed the deficit to 9-6. Central Michigan (27-24-1) would score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth to take a commanding lead.
Michigan State (24-25) will host a four-game set against Indiana beginning Thursday, May 15 at Kobs Field. Game one on Thursday is set for 3:05 p.m. MSU is just a half-game out of a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
