
Hutchison Places Second, Spartans Finish Fifth at Mizzou Tiger Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team shot a final round 10-over par 298, the second lowest team round of the day, to move up to fifth place at the UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Classic at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Spartans finish the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 256-over 890 (300-292-298).
Junior Randy Hutchison had a career-best finish this week, placing second at one-under par 215 (72-71-72), the lowest 54-hole tournament score in his collegiate career. The finish is Hutchison's second career top-five placement, having finished in fifth at the Landfall Tradition in his freshman season. Also, his final round even-par 72 tied with two other golfers for the day's low round.
Fellow junior Jordan Ensrud moved up a couple spots on the final day, to tie for 15th at eight-over 224 (74-74-76). Freshman Payne Gniewek also climbed up the leaderboard during tday's final round, posting a one-over 73, to improve to a tie for 29th, having begun the day in 43rd. Gniewek ended the two days at 12-over 228 (77-78-73). Sophomore Jack Newman and senior Ryan Brehm rounded out the Spartans in the field, with Newman tying for 32nd at 13-over 229 (77-73-79) and Brehm tying for 48th at 19-over 235 (84-74-77).
Indiana held on for the team championship topping Kansas State by five strokes. The Wildcats attempted a comeback on Tuesday with today's low round of seven-over 295, but fell short with a 54-hole score of 22-over 886 (298-293-295). The Hoosiers ended the tournament at 17-over 881 (294-286-301) for the win. Arkansas was third at 24-over 888, followed by Iowa State (25-over 889) and the Spartans.
Indiana's Jorge Campillo took the individual title with a four-under 212 (72-66-74), highlighted by his competitive course record six-under 66 in yesterday's second round. Hutchison was the only other golfer under par for the tournament, as Kansas State's Mitchell Gregson was third at one-over 217 (71-74-72).
The Spartans return to the course this weekend for the 39th-Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, April 12-13 in Columbus, Ohio.
