COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Ryan Brehm completed a consistent weekend to win the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, held on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University's Golf Club. Brehm shot a two-over par 73 today, following a 72 and a 73 in yesterday's first two rounds, to win his fourth tournament of the season and fifth of his career, by four strokes with a five-over 218. In addition, the Spartans placed second as a team with a 51-over par 903 (303-302-298).
Brehm broke a first day tie with Ohio State's Zach Sebert to become the fourth Spartan in the last four tournament to place among the top-two individual finishers. Brehm followed a win by sophomore Jack Newman in Western Intercollegiate, and second place finishes by junior Jordan Ensrud at UC Men's Collegiate Invitational and junior Randy Hutchison at Mizzou Tiger Classic.
MSU shot its lowest round of the tournament today, a 14-over 298, but could not hold off the University of Colorado, who carded a tournament low 10-over 294 to end the weekend at 48-over 900 (299-307-294). The second place finish is the Spartans sixth top-five finish in nine 2007-08 tournaments.
Hutchison and freshman Payne Gneiwek tied for 19th at 15-over 228. Gniewek matched Brehm's score today with a two-over 73, his best round of the weekend, while Hutchison fired a four-over 75. Newman ended up in a group tied for 27th at 18-over 231, after a six-over 77 on Sunday. Also in the lineup for MSU was Ensrud, who finished at 26-over 239 to tie for 53rd.
The Spartans return to the links on Saturday, April 19 for the two-day The Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
