EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team squared off against Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing. The Spartans jumped out to a quick lead, sweeping all doubles matches and taking the first point of the match. MSU would cruise from there, taking the first three matches in singles, and defeating the Sycamores, 5-2.
Michigan State came out looking strong as they took all three doubles matches from Indiana State. MSU's No. 1 Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler defeated Jennifer Migan and Marie Caujolle, 8-4, while No. 2 Lindsey Lonergan and Manon Noe took out ISU's Sarah Meghoufel and Fadzai Masiyazi, 8-6. MSU's No. 3 Ana Milosavljevic and Whitney Wilson recorded their seventh victory of the year in doubles, defeating Joanne Schickerling and Valeriia Petrovych, 8-2.
Michigan State stayed on its game as it took the court for singles, winning flights 2-5. Milosavljevic looked dominant in her match at No. 5 for the Spartans as she overpowered ISU's Caujolle 6-4, 6-0. At No. 4, Lonergan made short work of Indiana State's Fadzai Masiyazi, winning 6-1, 6-3, in straight sets. MSU's Noe looked on her way to a quick victory over Meghoufel at No. 2, as she won the first set, 6-1, but Meghoufel fought back in the second, bringing the Spartan freshman into a tiebreaker. The points went back and forth for the second set, but Noe pulled out the victory in the end, winning the second frame, 7-6 (9-7).
"We spent much of the week working on our doubles play," said MSU head coach Erica Perkins. "Our hard work really paid off tonight, and it showed as we came out aggressively at all three positions and didn't look back. When we play aggressive, first-strike doubles, we are tough to beat. I knew Indiana State would come out strong in singles, and I was happy with how we handled that pressure and played smart tennis. This is a very good win for us and we will look to continue to improve this week as we prepare for Western Michigan."
MSU will play host to Western Michigan next Saturday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
