EAST LANSING, Mich. - Second round action at the 2008 Northrup Grumman Challenge wrapped up on Tuesday at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif. The Michigan State women's golf team finished the day with a 31-over par 315 to sit in 15th place at 59-over par 627 after two rounds. Freshman Aimee Neff has led the Spartans with back-to-back six-over par 77s, tying her for 37th as an individual.
Neff, beginning on the back-nine for the second-straight day, started with three pars, before a string of three bogeys. She bounced back with two birdies and two pars over the next four holes. A difficult stretch of four bogeys and a double-bogey over the next seven followed, but Neff finished strong with a birdie on the ninth.
Senior Sara Brown is tied for 43rd after Tuesday's seven-over par 78, which followed yesterday's 77. Brown started with three pars, but would bogey five of the next six to close out the opening nine. She would birdie three holes in her second nine (2nd, 5th and 7th), however they were offset by three bogeys and a double-bogey.
Sophomore Laura Kueny bounced back a bit from yesterday's 80, to shoot a six-over 77, moving her up to a tie for 50th. Kueny carded three birdies on the day. Senior Jordyn Wells, after a second round 12-over par 83, is in a tie for 67th and freshman Michelle Bowles is tied for 78th and shot a 14-over par 85 today.
No. 3 USC fired a Tuesday low four-over par 288 to pass No. 2 and Monday leader UCLA, who carded a 15-over par 299, by one stroke heading into tomorrow final round. No. 8 Florida is three stokes back from the Trojans after a seven-over par 291 today. Pepperdine's Taylore Karle remained in the individual lead at one-under 141 (70-71), leading a group of four student-athletes by two strokes.
The Northrup Grumman concludes tomorrow with a 11:15 a.m. ET shotgun start.
