EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior cross country standout Nicole Bush added to her long list of accolades this week when she was voted NCAA Great Lakes Regional Women's Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She is the first in MSU history to receive the award.
"It's a great honor," said director of track & field and cross country Walt Drenth. "She's been consistent and competitive all year and it's something, frankly, that didn't come as a great surprise. She's surrounded herself with people that do well and her expectations are high and she has earned it."
This season, Bush has won both the Big Ten and NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. Her first-place finish at the conference meet helped her to become the fourth runner in Spartan history to earn Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year honors.
"It's really nice, especially going with Big Ten Athlete of the Year," Bush said. "I mean those are things I never would have considered, even last year because they are like things that other people get and other people do. So, it's really an honor."
Bush and the 13th-ranked Spartans will compete in the NCAA Championships on Monday (Nov. 24) in Terre Haute, Ind.
