
Thirteen Spartan Wrestlers Place at EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team kicked off the season on Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open, with 13 Spartans taking sixth place or higher in their respective weight classes.
Six Spartans placed in the open division. Senior Rex Kendle finished second in the 165-pound class after picking up two decisions and an 8-0 major decision over Purdue's Jason Martin. Redshirt freshman Ian Hinton and sophomore Eric Anderson both placed in the 184-pound class, with Hinton taking second and Anderson sixth.
In the 149-pound class, senior Tim Hammer took fourth place after earning three victories, including a 12-1 major decision over Michigan's Jacob Johnson. Senior John Murphy finished fourth at 174, and redshirt freshman Tyler Dickenson finished sixth at 197.
Seven wrestlers also placed in the freshman/sophomore division. True freshman Colby Borchetta and redshirt freshman Eric Olanowski took second and third, respectively, in the 125-pound class. Redshirt freshman Curran Jacobs also picked up a second-place finish, falling to Central Michigan's Ben Bennett in the 174-pound finals. Bryant Craft placed sixth at 174 as well.
True freshman Grant Ankney finished third at 133, pinning Mercyhurst's Brian Gaines and Grand Valley State's T.J. Sobeck along the way. True freshman John Hebert and redshirt freshman Phil Khozein picked up sixth-place finishes at 133 and 157, respectively.
The Spartans return to the mat next weekend when they host the MSU Open on Sunday, Nov. 9.
