EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team opens the 2007-08 season hosting the 24th Annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course (par-72/6,236 yards), Sept. 8-9. MSU has won the fall tournament on its home course in three of the last four years, capturing the 2003 and 2005 Mary Fossum Invitationals and the 2006 Lady Northern Invitational.
The 2007 field contains nine programs traveling to Michigan State including Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Michigan, Missouri and Toledo. While the Spartans took the team title in 2006, Kent State's Tara Delaney captured the individual title finishing one under par at 215.
The Spartans begin their 2007-08 campaign coming off of an incredibly successful 2006-07 season, capped off by claiming the 2007 Big Ten Championship title on their home course. MSU returns senior Sara Brown, who has the lowest scoring average in school history, junior Holly Niederkohr, who was a significant contributor in 2006-07, and sophomore Laura Kueny, who had a sensational start to her career in the fall, before being declared academically ineligible for the spring. Senior Jordyn Wells, two redshirt sophomores and two redshirt freshmen fill out the veteran roster.
Additionally, the Spartans may look to the rookies for immediate action. As one of the finest recruiting classes in Michigan State history, the Spartans welcome freshmen Aimee Neff, a Future Collegiate World Tour All-American who also had significant success in the American Junior Golf Association, Ashley Lance, a two-time Tennessee state champ and Michelle Bowles, who comes to MSU from Mexico and starred on the Mexican Junior Golf Tour, where she finished no lower than fourth in 25 events.
This weekend, the Mary Fossum Invitational will feature 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday with 9 a.m. shotgun starts. Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com, while complete Spartan coverage is posted at www.msuspartans.com.
