Kickoff

The Michigan State women's soccer team (1-1) travels to Pennsylvania this weekend for contests against two first-time opponents. The Spartans will play Penn on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. before battling Lehigh on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Spartans

The Spartans, who return 10 starters and 16 letterwinners from last year's 8-9-1 team, enter the week with a 1-1 ledger. Fifth-year senior Nicole Galas has played every minute in goal this season and has 11 saves. Senior co-captain Erin Doan, senior Taryn Lee and sophomore Katie Rehor anchor the Spartan defense. Leading scorer Lauren Sinacola and senior co-captain Maureen Pawlak, who has 30 career points, are the top two players in the midfield. Sophomore Lauren Hill, MSU's leading scorer a year ago, and freshman Cara Freeman are the team's top forwards.

SCOUTING PENN

The Quakers enter this week 2-0 after defeating 2006 College Cup qualifier Saint Louis, 1-0, last Friday, and routing Robert Morris, 4-1, on Sunday. Jessica Fucello is the team's leading scorer. Penn was 8-5-3 last season.

SCOUTING LEHIGH

Lehigh is 1-1 after a season-opening win over Quinnipiac (2-0) and a loss to No. 12 Rutgers (0-2). A pair of freshmen, Glynn Fitzer and Lena Cannon, lead the Mountain Hawks in scoring with one goal apiece. Julie Kafka and Lauren Mains have split time in goal.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK

MSU split its two matches last week, falling to Mountain West Conference preseason favorite BYU, 1-0, in overtime on Friday before defeating Syracuse, 2-1, on Sunday. The Spartans and the Cougars were scoreless until BYU scored in the 94th minute. Lauren Sinacola scored two first-half goals to lead MSU to the win over the Orange.

SINACOLA STRIKES TWICE

Lauren Sinacola now has seven career goals after her two-tally performance against Syracuse. Her first goal, which was also MSU's first of the season, came on a free kick in the third minute. The Rochester, Mich., native also found the back of the net in the 25th minute to lead MSU to victory.

...AND PICKS UP BIG TEN HONORS

Lauren Sinacola was named Big Ten Offensive Co-Player of the Week for her efforts last weekend, her first career weekly honor. She shared the honor with Ella Masar of Illinois.
