IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa's Jackie Kaeding scored on the tail end of a corner kick in the second half that gave Iowa a 1-0 win over the Michigan State in women's soccer on Friday evening . The loss send s MSU to 5-3-2, while Iowa improves to 5-1-3. The match was the Big Ten opener for both schools.

Kaeding's goal came at the 55:34 mark on an Alexandria Seydel corner kick. Seydel got the ball to the Hawkeyes' Kelsey Shaw, whose shot was stopped by MSU goalkeeper Nicole Galas. The rebound went to Kaeding, who sent an easy shot into the back of the net.

"It was going to come down to whoever got the first goal," head coach Tom Saxton said. "Once they scored, we got a little disorganized, and couldn't start attacking again until late in the match."

Michigan State actually out-shot the Hawkeyes, 9-8. Senior Maureen Pawlak had a game-high five shots, but MSU couldn't get anything past UI's Lindsey Boldt, who made five saves in the shutout effort.

"I thought we had some very nice scoring chances, Saxton said. "We just couldn't get that first goal. Their goalie made several unbelievable saves.

"Iowa was very good defensively, and they played with a lot of emotion after they scored that goal. It was a hard - fought Big Ten battle."

Iowa's Stephanie Hyink had three shots, all on goal, to lead the home team. Sophomore Lauren Sinacola and freshman Cara Freeman each had one shot, and Galas made five saves in goal for the Spartans.

MSU returns to action on Sunday at Minnesota. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
