Spartans Finish Fifth at The Maxwell

Norman, OK - Michigan State shot a third-round 271 on Sunday to finish fifth at the Maxwell, hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Dornick Country Club, a par-70, 6,453-yard course. The Spartans shot first- and second-round scores of 267 and 266 for a three-round total of 804 for the tournament; 36-under par for the two-day affair. Oklahoma State (-60) captured the teamn title, while Tulsa (-53), Southern Methodist (-43) and Oklahoma City (-42) rounded out the top five.
Individually, Matt Harmon fired a final-round 69 (tied with the top Spartan round of the day with Steve Cuzzort) to take 13th place with a three-day total of 207 (-3) over 54 holes in MSU's final tuneup before NCAA play begins. Cuzzort and Jack Newman finished in a three-way tie for 15th, with a one-under-par 209. Newman's final round of 74 saw him fall from a tie for sixth after two rounds. Ryan Brehm was right behind in a tie for 18th with 210 for the weekend after carding a 70 in the final round; Grant Tungate had a Sunday score of 73 to finish with 218 to tie for 43rd.
The individual title went to Tulsa's Nick Geyger, who holed out for eagle on the first playoff hole to defeat OSU's Ryan Posey in the first playoff in Maxwell history. The 26th-ranked Spartans now prepare for the NCAA Central Regional, which will be held next weekend (May 17-19) at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The top 10 finishing teams at Regionals advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
