COLUMBUS, Ohio - After finishing 36 holes yesterday at the Big Ten Championships, the Michigan State men's golf team moved up the leader board from second to first after carding a third-round 296, the lowest total of the day, for a 54-hole total of 889 (298-295-296--889). Ryan Brehm leads State after turning in a round of 1-over-par 72 for a 217 total and sits in second-place overall.
"Our goal today was to win today's round," head coach Mark Hankins said. "That will also be the goal tomorrow. If we can do that, then I think we can come out on top tomorrow."
Michigan State holds a six shot lead over second-place Purdue (299-292-304--895), nine shots over Minnesota (307-293-298--898) and 13 over fourth-place Indiana (299-303-300--902), Ohio State (295-306-301--902) and Wisconsin (306-295-301--902).
Individually, Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul remained in first place with a 1-over-par 214 (69-72-73--214). Junhasavasdikul leads MSU's Brehm by three strokes and third-place David Vallina of Ohio State (70-74-75--219) by five.
Brehm, who has finished in second place at the Big Ten Championship for two consecutive years, moved up from yesterday's fourth-place finish. The junior double bogeyed the first hole, but strung together three birdies and 12 pars to finish with a 72.
"Ryan played a solid round today, while battling a tough course setup," Hankins said. "He has played very patiently over the past three rounds and I expect him to take the same mentality tomorrow."
Senior Matt Harmon had a tough round, only turning in one birdie on the day and carded a 78 for the round. His total for 54 holes is a 9-over-par 222 (73-71-78), good for sixth place.
Freshman Jack Newman moved up in the standings and is now tied for 17th. He shot his lowest round of the tournament thus far, 72, brining his total to 13-over 226 (77-77-72). Sophomores Steve Cuzzort and Grant Tungate are both tied for 37th with 233 totals.
Michigan State returns to the Scarlet course tomorrow for the final 18 holes. The Spartans begin teeing off at 8:50 a.m. and live results can be found on golfstat.com.
