
Wrestling Goes 2-1 In ACC-Big Ten Clash

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Michigan State wrestling (2-2) made a strong appearance for the Big Ten Conference at Saturday's ACC-Big Ten Clash, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Eddie Smith Field House. MSU defeated North Carolina in round one, 21-15, and North Carolina State in round three, 23-15, sandwiching a second-round loss to Virginia, 29-10. Sophomore Franklin Gomez, ranked sixth at 133 pounds, bested all three of his opponents of the day, including one ranked wrestler, and improved to 8-0 on the season. The Spartans improve to 2-2 on the season in dual meets.
Big Ten and ACC programs split the six head-to-head duals 3-3, but North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia narrowly outscored Michigan State and Purdue, 112-110.
In round one action, Michigan State tallied the first win for the Big Ten Conference, defeating UNC. Joel Trombly posted an impressive 8-0 major decision over Jason DeLuca at 125 while Gomez picked up a four-minute technical fall against Danny Lopes. Senior captain Joe Williams pinned Don Goetter in 2:34, his second dual pin in as many contests. John Murphy and Nick Palmieri also contributed wins in the Spartans' overall victory.
The Spartans third-round win over North Carolina State featured Tim Hammer's first dual start and win of the season, as he pinned Josh Langholtz in 4:02 in the 149 weight class. Palmieri tacked on four team points for MSU with his 18-3 major decision over Dane Coffee; his 18 points is the most of any Spartan so far this season. Clint Frutiger got the nod, starting at 125, and tallied a three-point decision for MSU, while Murphy posted an 8-5 upset over No. 14 Randy Goodman.
In the second-round loss to Virginia, MSU's performance was highlighted by Williams' 10-2 major decision over UVA's No. 20 Brent Jones in the 197 class. Gomez also tallied a win over a ranked opponent, nearly earning a major decision against No. 9 Eric Albright with his 7-1 victory. Trombly also picked up a an 8-5 win.
Michigan State wrestling continues action on the road, traveling to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., to take on 10th-ranked Central Michigan at 7:30 p.m. for a midweek dual on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
