EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan cross country teams traveled to Dexter, Mich. on Friday for the EMU Classic hosted by Eastern Michigan University at Hudson Mills. Four schools competed in this afternoon's race including: Michigan State, Michigan, Akron, and the University of Windsor. Today's race was scored individually and consisted of no team scoring.
Laurel Bennett was the top finisher for the Spartan women, finishing sixth out of 44 runners with a time of 18:26, beating her personal best by 30 seconds. Jenna Nusholtz crossed the finish line next in ninth place with a time of 18:56. Elizabeth Hoefing followed shorty after in 12th (19:04), and Megan Gebhart, running unattached, came in shorty after in 13th with time of 19:11. Jackie Gross came in at 19:24 for 16th place, while Laura Portis finished in 18th (19:35) and Jennifer Yee, running unattached, finished at 19:36, for 19th place to round out the top-20 for the Spartans.
The four remaining MSU women runners were Sarah McCormack who finished in 21st (19:44), Thereseann Zimmerman (27th-20:05), Tiffany Evans (unattached-29th-20:25) and Kelley Miller (unattached-34th-20:35).
"The girls showed a lot of guts out there today. We will look to them to help the team in bigger races to come," said MSU coach Rita Arndt-Molis.
The Spartan men ran unattached to give them a chance to get some competition without losing eligibility. Joe Dimambro was the top Spartan finisher coming in at 32:45, good enough for eight place. Aaron Simoneau placed 10th (32:56), Nick Tecca came in in 17th place (33:45), freshman Paul Grieve finished in 24th (34:31), and Brenden Marcum rounded out the MSU runners finishing in 26th with a time of 34:27.
"The men ran very well today. Joe, Aaron, and Nick, in particular, did a great job today. It was easy as coaches to see that these guys will be very helpful to our program in the future," said coach Arndt-Molis.
The Spartans travel to Columbus, Ohio next Sunday, Oct. 28, to compete in the Big Ten Championships. Both the men's and women's teams finished in fourth place at last year's championships.
