The Michigan State men's golf team is currently fifth in of a field of 15 after two rounds at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by UAB, in Birmingham, Ala. The Spartans have compiled a 36-hole score of 589 (296-293), 13 strokes behind leader Alabama.
The two-day, 54-hole event is being held at the Shoal Creek Country Club, a par-72, 7,114-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course ranked No. 49 on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public and Private Golf Courses in America list.
Michigan State is led by red-shirt sophomore Grant Tungate, who is tied for 10th place at 145 (74-71). Tungate's second round total of 71 was the Spartan low score of the day. One stroke back of Tungate is junior Ryan Brehm, tied at 17th with a 146 (74-72).
Also competing for Michigan State is senior Matt Harmon (T25, 76-73--149), sophomore Randy Hutchison (T32, 73-77--150) and freshman Jack Newman (T39, 75-80--155).
The final 18 holes of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate will begin Tuesday with a split-tee start at 8:15 a.m.
